LSIS Chairman & CEO Koo Ja-kyun has predicted that the smart grid market connected to direct current (DC) power will expand in the future. If Korean companies fail to keep up with the trend, the global electricity industry will have a high entry barrier, he said.

Attending a “smart grid policy seminar” at Intercontinental Seoul COEX Hotel on July 10 as the Korea Smart Grid Association (KSGA) Chairman, Koo added, “The smart grid industry now should analyze the current policies and challenging factors of market conditions to seek alternatives.”

He went on to say, “Edison’s DC system, which lost to Tesla’s alternating current (AC) system in the War of the Currents 130 years ago, is now getting the spotlight again. As LG and Samsung have quickly responded to the trend of digital transformation to take top global positions, we should also seize a chance for smart grids connected to direct current power in the global power industry.”

In this regard, he said, “Since smart grids encompass most business models of new industries of energy, alternatives should be urgently found for market revitalization.”
