Stolen Information

National Assemblyman Seo Il-joon of the People Power Party called for an immediate investigation into an alleged KDDX defense mafia case during the Moon Jae-in administration, citing the recent confirmation of the conviction of nine HD Hyundai employees who secretly stole military and trade secrets by photographing data about Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME)’s warships.

“According to recent media reports, the court’s conviction of all nine HD Hyundai employees confirmed that they systematically stole information on the warships of HD Hyundai’s competitor DSME to help them prepare proposals for future orders,” Rep. Seo said. “The HD Hyundai employees stole the warship-related data of Daewoo Shipbuilding by hiding cameras and shooting videos and leaked military secrets by sharing the information on internal servers.”

The stolen materials include first-review materials on a KDDX conceptual design, the interim status of a Jangbogo-III Warship conceptual design, a revised basic strategy for the Jangbogo-III Project, and the final report of a Jangbogo-I performance improvement study.

“In particular, Hyundai Heavy Industries stole data from DSME and was able to win the KDDX Project from the Korean Defense Acquisition Program Administration as HD Hyundai was promoting the takeover of DSME as a probable buyer, and the Moon Jae-in administration did a favor for HD Hyundai,” said Rep. Seo.

Meanwhile, with HD Hyundai unable to hide its discomfort over a review of Hanwha Group’s takeover of DSME, Seo’s comments have sparked controversy.
