Internet of Standardized Things

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) announced on June 26 that its Standard Research Center head Kim Hyung-jun was elected as vice chairman of the study group for the Internet of Things (IoT) and Smart City and chairman of the IoT section of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), which was formed on June 5.

This is the first time in the 59 years of ITU’s history of standardization. Usually, the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA), which is being held every four years, decides whether or not to create a new study group.

From 2008, the ETRI has proceeded with international standardization in the radio frequency identification (RFID) and the ubiquitous sensor network (USN) sectors through various contributions. Also, it has secured leadership of the IoT standardization cooperation group under the ITU from 2011, making efforts to manage the technology standardization of the IoT.

The name of the new research group is the IoT and its applications including smart cities and communities. Center Managing Director Kim Hyung-jun has become vice chairman of the new study group and chairman of the IoT technology standardization work group under the group at the same time. Accordingly, he will play a role as a chief officer who manages ITU’s IoT technology standardization.

Kim will carry out the standard development of IoT application services and IoT infrastructure to realize smart cities and communities. Also, he will be involved in the IoT standardization cooperation between internal and external agencies of the ITU in the future.
