The first large-scale supply contract for nuclear power generation in Korea in about 10 years has injected strong new vitality into Korea’s nuclear power plant ecosystem. Doosan Enerbility announced on March 29 that it has signed a contract to supply the main equipment needed for Shin Hanul Units 3 and 4, worth 2.9 trillion won (US$2.2 billion), to Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP).

This is the first largest order received by Doosan Enerbility since one for Shin Kori Units 5 and 6 which was won at 2.3 trillion won (US$1.8 billion) in 2014.

Under this contract, Doosan Enerbility will manufacture and supply key main equipment such as reactors, steam generators, and turbine generators for Shin Hanul units 3 and 4. About 460 Korean companies participate in production of the main equipment. Shin Hanul units 3 and 4 will be built in the county of Uljin in North Gyeongsang Province. They are planned to be completed in 2032 and 2033, respectively.

Shin Hanul units 3 and 4 will use the APR1400 Reactor, a 1400 MW Korean standard model. Starting with Saeul Unit 1 completed in 2019, APR1400 Reactor was applied to Units 1 to 4 at the UAE’s Barakah Nuclear Power Plant and Saeul units 3 and 4, proving its competitiveness in performances, safety, and economic efficiency.

“We will join forces with about 460 Korean nuclear power plant partners for production of this main equipment,” a Doosan Enerbility official said. “We are planning to place orders for materials and parts for the main equipment and machining, pipe making, and heat treatment services for the production process with Korean companies.”
