Hyundai Motor Group is expected to commercialize a robot that automatically recharges an electric vehicle when it stops in a designated area.

On March 21, Hyundai Motor Group released a demonstration video of an automatic electric vehicle charging robot. It is a one-armed robot that picks up the cable of an electric car charger and plugs it into the charging port of an electric car. It then returns the charger to its original place when charging is complete.

When an electric vehicle is parked in a charging area, the automatic charging robot asks the electric vehicle to open the electric car’s charging port cover, and the robot calculates the electric car’s exact position and the angle of its charging port through a camera mounted on the robot. Then, the robot picks up the charger, puts it into the vehicle and starts the charging. When charging is complete, the robot pulls out the charger, moves it back to its original place and closes the vehicle charging port cover.

To enable charging even on rainy days, the charging robot has IP65 waterproof and dustproof ratings. It is also designed to operate well even at high and low temperatures.

Hyundai Motor Group plans to showcase the charging robot at the 2023 Seoul Mobility Show, which will kick off on March 31.
