SsangYong Motor announced on Feb. 16 that it has obtained a European Cybersecurity Management System (CSMS) certification.

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) enacted a relevant act (UNR155) in July 2020. The act stipulates that a CSMS certification be obtained, and vehicle type approval (VTA) also be obtained to prove that vehicles are developed according to the CSMS System.

The CSMS requires automakers to establish a systematic process and management system for the entire lifecycle of a vehicle, including development, production, and post-production, in order to safely protect the vehicle and its systems, such as electric/electronic parts, from cyber threats.

In addition, a CSMS certificate must be obtained every three years, and new cars sold in Europe from July 2022 and all mass-produced cars sold locally from July 2024 must comply with cybersecurity regulations.

Accordingly, SsangYong Motor acquired the CSMS certification in December 2022. It plans to acquire Software Update Management System (SUMS) and VTA certifications within the second half of 2023.
