Regarding the Canakkale Bridge in Turkey

The Canakkale Bridge in Turkey

Chinese Consul General in Belfast Zhang Meifang said on Twitter that the Canakkale Bridge in Turkey was built by China and survived the recent earthquake. The post was shared by the Chinese embassy in France.

What they said is false information. The bridge across the Dardanelles Strait was built by DL E&C and SK Ecoplant and opened in March last year after contract conclusion in 2017. The bridge is 3,563 meters in length and its main tower is 334 meters in height. For reference, the heights of the Eiffel and Tokyo Towers are 320 meters and 333 meters, respectively.

In September last year, the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork granted the European Steel Bridge Award to the builders and the bridge for its high resistance to strong wind, earthquake, etc.

A lot of people criticized the consul general and the embassy for the false information and the consul general deleted the post. The location of the bridge is more than 1,000 km away from earthquake-stricken southern Turkey and northern Syria.
