Samsung Electronics will collaborate with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) to foster robotics engineers.

The two sides agreed on Feb. 13 to launch a Samsung Electronics robotics talent training program, a recruitment-linked master’s course. They will select 10 scholarship students every year beginning from 2023.

During their school year, students will receive scholarships that include tuition fees and allowances. They will join Samsung Electronics as soon as they receive their degrees. They will also be given opportunities to receive Samsung Electronics’ on-the-job training programs and visit robotics conferences and overseas exhibitions.

Samsung Electronics chairman Lee Jae-yong announced in 2021 that he would invest 240 trillion won in future new businesses, including robots and artificial intelligence, over three years. He designated the robot business as one of the company’s future growth drivers. On Jan. 3, Lee announced that he would invest 59 billion won in Rainbow Robotics, a KOSDAQ-listed company, to acquire a 10 percent stake.

Rainbow Robotics is a small startup founded by researchers at the KAIST Humanoid Robot Research Center in 2011. The company developed Hubo, the first bipedal robot in Korea.

According to the International Federation of Robotics, the global robot market is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 17 percent from US$36 billion in 2022 to US$53 billion in 2025.
