A Deal Worth KRW20tn

Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) has submitted to the Turkish government a preliminary proposal for the construction of a large-scale nuclear power plant in Turkey.

KEPCO president Cheong Seung-il visited Turkey on Jan. 30 and discussed its participation in the Turkish nuclear power plant project with Fatih Dönmez, Turkish minister of energy and natural resources. At the meeting, Cheong delivered a preliminary proposal for the nuclear power plant project and discussed major issues related to it.

The proposal included an introduction of KEPCO and Korea’s strong nuclear power plant construction capabilities, and KEPCO's plans to promote the project.

KEPCO and the Turkish government are promoting the construction of four next-generation Korean nuclear power reactors (APR1400) with a capacity of 1,400 MW in northern Turkey. The scale of the project is expected to exceed that of the three nuclear reactors at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Barakah project is KEPCO’s first overseas export of nuclear reactors, and the export deal was signed in 2009.

Previously, in December 2022, Turkey requested KEPCO to submit a preliminary proposal as the first stage of consultations.

Cheong noted that a total of 10 APR1400 reactors are running stably at home and abroad, proving its technological prowess and safety. “Among nuclear power plant builders around the world, KEPCO is currently the only operator that has gained customer trust by meeting budgets and deadlines,” he stressed.
