Chinese Foreign Ministry Expresses Its Discontent

Mao Ning, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China

The South Korean government extended limited visa issuance to Chinese and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China expressed its discontent.

On Jan. 2, the South Korean government suspended short-term visa issuance to Chinese with COVID-19 spreading again in China. The suspension is until Jan. 31 and exceptions have been applied to essential visits for, for example, diplomatic, humanitarian and corporate management purposes.

The Chinese government took the same measure for retaliation. In addition, the same measure was taken against Japan as well. Despite the retaliation, the South Korean government decided on Jan. 27 to extend its measure until Feb. 28. The ministry expressed the discontent on Jan. 30.

The Chinese government canceled its limited visa issuance to Japanese the previous day, in the face of criticisms that it was implemented without the Japanese government taking the same action.
