KASS to Be Put into Operation on Dec. 15

The Korea Augmentation Satellite System (KASS) will be put into operation on Dec. 15, reducing the GPS error range.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced that the Korea Augmentation Satellite System (KASS) would be put into operation on Dec. 15. The system is to reduce the GPS error range to 1 to 1.6 m so that more precise location information services can be provided nationwide.

The ministry launched the first satellite of the system in June this year and has tested it with the Korea Aerospace Research Institute. According to the test results, the error range has been considerably reduced to about 1 m.

The ministry is planning to discuss how to better utilize it with the private sector and government agencies. It is expected to be combined with car navigation systems, drones, smartphones, and so on.

“When combined with smartphones, the KASS can enhance the accuracy and precision of car navigation, taxi request, parking, and so on,” an expert said, adding, “In addition, it will be very helpful in urban air mobility, autonomous driving, emergency rescue, agriculture, and many more.”
