Demand for OLED Monitors Growing

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are on a collision course in the organic light emitting diode (OLED) monitor market.

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics will face off in the organic light emitting diode (OLED) monitor market. They have begun to use OLED panels for high-performance gaming monitors.

LG Electronics launched a new OLED gaming monitor, starting to expand its market share. The product uses an OLED panel from LG Display. It is the first OLED monitor and has a 240㎐ refresh rate.

The refresh rate means the number of pictures that can be displayed per second. The new LG monitor can display 240 pictures per second. The higher a refresh rate is, the smoother an image can be displayed on the monitor.

The new product has a response speed of 0.03ms. Because OLED panels emit light on their own, they have a faster response speed than LCD monitors. The response speed of OLED monitors is known to be 100 times faster than that of LCD monitors. If a response speed is fast, there is no afterimage left when switching pictures, so you can see clear images.

The model has two sizes -- 45 inches and 27 inches. The 45-inch model has a resolution of WQHD (3440x1440) and a curvature of 800R. The smaller the curvature figure is, the more it can bend. The 27-inch model has a QHD (2560x1440) resolution.

Samsung Electronics is also preparing to launch an OLED gaming monitor. The company took the wraps off the Odyssey OLED G8 Monitor equipped with a Quantum Dot (QD)-OLED panel at G-Star 2022 held in November. This model has a curvature of 1800R. It has a WQHD (3440x1440) resolution, a 175Hz refresh rate, and a 0.1ms response speed.

Samsung Electronics has been using LCD panels for its gaming monitors. However, in the future, it will target the gaming monitor market with high-end products loaded with OLED panels. This is because Samsung Display, which supplies QD-OLED panels to Samsung Electronics, has raised yields to a level where mass production is possible.

The OLED monitor market has high growth potential, as high-end game releases are growing, fueling demand for high-end gaming monitors. OLED panels have a faster response speed than LCD panels, so users can see a clearer picture on OLED monitors. OLED panels are mainly installed in gaming monitors that require high specifications.

Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), a market researcher, expected shipments of OLED panels for monitors to reach 600,000 units this year. This represents an increase of 328 percent compared to the previous year. The share of OLED panels in the premium monitor market is also expected to climb to 15 percent by the end of this year from 9 percent in 2021.

Electronics companies can show their strong display technology through their gaming monitors. This is why Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are putting their efforts into the OLED monitor market. Usually, movies and dramas use a refresh rate of 60Hz to 80Hz. On the other hand, high-end games require fancy graphics and a high refresh rate of 120 Hz or more.
