Discusses Cooperation in Energy Sector with UAE Officials

Korea Electric Power Cor. (KEPCO) President Cheong Seung-il visited the construction site of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Dec. 4 (local time). At the site, he checked the current status of the construction project and discussed cooperation in the energy sector with key officials from the UAE government.

According to KEPCO, Cheong visited the nuclear power plant from Dec. 3 to 5. Currently, Units 1 and 2 of the plant are in commercial operation and Unit 3 is undergoing a power increase test after reaching the first criticality in September 2021. Unit 4 is going through the final test run before fueling.

KEPCO expects the commercial operation of Unit 3 to start sometime next year. It will be one year after the commercial operation of Unit 2.

During his visit to the UAE, Chung met with Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Affairs Authority, and Mohamed Al Hammadi, president of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corp. (ENEC).

“We will make sure that the UAE nuclear power plant project is completed successfully,” Cheong said, adding, “Using the success of this project as a stepping stone, we will actively promote overseas nuclear power plant projects in the United Kingdom, Turkey, South Africa, and Kenya.”
