Major Members Not Joining

Members of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions stage strikes.

The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions stages nationwide general strikes on Dec. 6 in order to support cargo transport workers’ strike. Some major members of the confederation, however, do not join the strikes.

For example, only some union heads join the strikes from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering. Unionized workers in the company have been on partial strike since Oct. 6, it has been led by union heads, and the workers are not planning to expand their strike.

The Hyundai Steel union is keeping its distance from the confederation, too. The union started its strike in September, stopped it last month, and is negotiating with the management for two weeks.

Hyundai Heavy Industries Group is also unlikely to join the nationwide strikes. A wage negotiation in the company is scheduled for the afternoon of Dec. 6, and the union may cancel a four-hour strike that day depending on the result of the talks. According to experts, the talks are about to be wrapped up with both sides showing signs of backing down.
