Korea Tobacco & Ginseng Corporation(KT&G) has built an elementary school in Nonkeo, Vientiane of Laos, together with the Sharing Culture and Arts Association, and held a ceremony to mark the completion of the school on Dec. 1.

KT&G has been promoting the construction of an elementary school in Nonkeo since November last year to support Laos’ educational infrastructure. The elementary school was completed in about a year from the start of its construction. The existing old and poor school building was reborn as an educational facility with six classrooms, a multipurpose room, a teacher’s office and four bathrooms among others.

The cost of building the school was entirely covered by Sangsang Fund, which is KT&G’s own social contribution fund, set up in 2011. Employees voluntarily donate part of their salaries to the fund and the company would match the same amount to it.

“I hope that the establishment of an elementary school in Nonkeo will be of some help to nurture future generations in Laos and improve the country’s educational environment,” said Lee Sang-hak, head of KT&G’s Sustainability Management Headquarters. “We will continue to actively participate in solving social problems in countries in need as a global corporate citizen.”
