Amid Nationwide Strikes Threatening to Paralyze the Economy

The National Assembly's Environment and Labor Committee holds a meeting on Nov. 30.

The opposition Democratic Party of Korea is pushing ahead with Trade Union and Labor Relations Adjustment Act amendment, with nationwide strikes poised to paralyze multiple industries.

The Environment and Labor Committee of the National Assembly tabled the amendment at its meeting on Nov. 30. The amendment is to limit employers’ provisional seizures and claims for damages targeting employees in the event of their strikes. The ruling People Power Party is opposed to the amendment, but the current majority party is the opposition.

Enterprises are objecting to the amendment, too. “It is not understandable why it hurries with cargo transport workers, Seoul Metro workers and Hyundai Heavy Industries workers on strike at the same time,” one of them said.
