To Achieve Greenhouse Gas Reduction Target

The South Korean government announced on Nov. 24 that the ratio of nuclear power generation to the total would be increased to 32.4 percent by 2030, renewable energy-based power generation would be increased to at least 100 GW by 2036, and the ratio of coal-based power generation would be reduced to less than 20 percent.

“The government is planning to achieve its greenhouse gas reduction goal by expanding nuclear power generation and renewable power generation, introducing power generation based on mixed combustion of hydrogen and ammonia, and reducing coal-based power generation,” it said, adding, “In 2030, nuclear power generation will account for 32.4 percent of the total with coal, LNG, renewable, and hydrogen and ammonia making up 19.7 percent, 22.9 percent, 21.6 percent and 2.1 percent, respectively.”

According to the government, the supply of nuclear power-based electricity is expected to increase from 24.7 GW to 31.7 GW a year from this year to 2036. In this period, LNG- and coal-based electric power supplies are forecast to increase from 41.3 GW to 64.6 GW and decrease from 38.1 GW to 27.1 GW, respectively. Renewable energy-based supply is planned to increase from 29.2 GW to 108.3 GW.

The above is the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s 10th framework plan for national electric power supply. A related public hearing is scheduled for Nov. 28 so that opinions of the public, interested parties and experts can be collected before finalization.
