EV Count Jumps 72.7% in Just One Year

The number of EVs registered in Korea almost doubled from 134,000 at the end of 2020 to 231,000 at the end of last year.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on Nov. 20 that the cumulative green car registration in South Korea was 1,515,000 at the end of last month, up 38.3 percent from a year ago. For reference, the count reached 500,000 in April 2019 and one million in July last year.

The ratio of green cars to the total car registration, 25,402,000 reached 5.96 percent at the end of October this year. The green cars include 1,121,000 hybrid, 365,000 electric and 27,000 hydrogen.

The EV count jumped 72.7 percent in just one year and those of hydrogen and hybrid cars increased 54.3 percent and 29.6 percent, respectively. The number of EVs registered in South Korea almost doubled from 134,000 to 231,000 from the end of 2020 to the end of last year.

By contrast, the numbers of registered diesel and LPG cars fell 1.1 percent and 1.9 percent to 9,779,000 and 1,913,000 in one year, respectively. The ratio of diesel cars to the total fell 1.4 percentage points to 38.5 percent and that of LPG cars fell 0.3 percentage point to 7.5 percent. The cumulative gasoline car registration increased 2.7 percent year on year to 12,013,000. Their ratio to the total rose 0.1 percentage point to 47.3 percent.
