In Cooperation with Agriculture Ministry and Nhabgroup

SK Incheon Petrochem, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and Nhabgroup have started a working-level discussion on a pilot project to build an eco-friendly livestock industry model.

The first meeting was held at the Livestock Environment Management Institute in Sejong City on Nov. 11.

SK Incheon Petrochem will install an environmental and safety management system, which is actually used at oil refining and petrochemical plants, at a pig pen of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation’s breeding center in Gochang, North Jeolla Province. It plans to start a test run of the system at the end of this year.

The company will install a scrubber system at pig pens and manure liquefaction facilities and seal them to remove order. It will also introduce a fire prevention and security reinforcement system, which is based on intelligent CCTV technology, for the pig pens.

The three parties have agreed to verify feasibility of the model for its diffusion across the country.

In the mid- to long-term, they have decided to introduce biogas resources to livestock farms to establish a sustainable and eco-friendly smart livestock industry model. The model will produce electricity by fermenting organic waste such as livestock manure and converting it into biogas containing methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2). It is expected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 22,000 tons per facility based on daily throughput of 150 tons. This volume is enough to supply electric power to 1,900 four-family-member households.

This pilot project is one of the follow-up measures of a business agreement on creating an eco-friendly livestock industry model signed by SK Incheon Petrochem, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, and the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation in June. At the time, these organizations announced that they will jointly promote the establishment of an environmental management system for livestock farms based on private technology and a project to expand renewable energy using livestock manure.

Starting with the pilot project, SK Incheon Petrochem plans to expand the scope of its eco-friendly green business by actively promoting the bio-gasification of organic waste resources.
