KHNP Signs LOI to Build a Nuclear Power Plant in Patnow

APR1400 reactor developed by South Korea

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of South Korea and the Ministry of State Assets of Poland signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Oct. 31 regarding nuclear power plant exports from South Korea to Poland. That day, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) signed a letter of intent (LOI) with PGE and ZEPAK to build a nuclear power plant in Patnow, Poland.

According to the LOI, the three companies will discuss specific plans regarding the project based on South Korea’s APR1400 reactor technology. The Polish state-run and private-sector companies decided to cooperate with KHNP in view of the fact that KHNP has successfully operated its nuclear power plants for four decades based on its advanced technologies.

At present, the government of Poland is planning to reduce reliance on fossil fuels by expanding the use of nuclear power and the private-sector project in Patnow is to supplement the government’s plan.

Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State Assets Jacek Sasin remarked at the signing ceremony that the project in Patnow will boost the two countries’ bilateral cooperation and they will be able to share more experience and knowledge.
