New memory modules from SK Hynix

SK Hynix announced on Oct. 25 that it has developed the industry’s first 32GB DDR5-6400Mbps PC-use unbuffered dual in-line memory module (UDIMM) and a small outline dual in-line memory module (SODIMM) and provided their samples to customers.

The new product boasts the fastest speed among existing PC and consumer DDR5 modules. 6400Mbps is a speed that can deliver 10 full HD movies (5GB) in one second. A new device called a clock driver (CKD) is applied to the new module to support its stable operation during high-speed data processing.

Industry watchers expect that DDR5 DRAMs will become mainstream in the memory semiconductor market as early as next year. If DDR5 DRAMs take the center stage, Korean chipmakers’ profitability is expected to improve. DDR5 DRAMs are a high value-added product that is 20-30 percent more expensive than DDR4 DRAMs. Their price fluctuation is relatively small.

According to market researcher Omdia, the percentage of DDR5 DRAMs in total DRAM shipments is expected to climb from 4.7 percent this year to 20.1 percent next year and 40.5 percent in 2025.
