EcoPro EM, a joint venture between Samsung SDI and EcoPro BM, held a ceremony on Oct. 21 to mark the completion of a cathode material plant in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province.

The new plant, dubbed CAM7, can produce 54,000 tons of cathode materials per year. When combined with the production capacity of CAM6, which was completed last year, EcoPro EM can supply 90,000 tons of cathode materials a year. The joint venture's entire production will be supplied to Samsung SDI. This volume is enough to make batteries for one million electric vehicles.

Samsung SDI will use the cathode materials to produce its flagship nickel cobalt aluminum (NCA) batteries -- Gen 5 and Gen 6. Samsung SDI said that it has now secured a stable supply of high-quality cathode materials.

EcoPro EM was launched in February 2020 by Samsung SDI and EcoPro BM, with the two companies holding a 40 percent and 60 percent stake, respectively.
