An International Embarrassment

Canakkale Bridge built by DL E&C and SK ecoplant and temporarily opened in March.

As DL E&C and SK ecoplant failed to meet the construction deadline of Canakkale Bridge in Turkey, the bridge was temporarily opened.

DL E&C and SK ecoplant announced that they had completed the Canakkale Bridge in March, but the remaining work was still in progress. Canakkale Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in the world connecting Europe and Asia. The bridge was originally scheduled to be completed in April of this year, but the actual completion date was put off by 11 months to March next year. It was temporarily opened in March last year.

Canakkale Bridge has a total length of 3,563 meters. Its main span, the distance between the main towers, is 2,023 meters long, the longest in the world. The numer 2023 honors the 100th anniversary of the victory of Turkey in World War I in 2023.

However, as DL E&C and SK ecoplant succeeded in the temporarily opening the Canakkale Bridge despite the delay, it did not pay any delay compensations to the Turkish authorities.

However, DL E&C and SK ecoplant have not yet paid additional construction costs to Korean partners due to the delay. Such a delay requires DL E&C and SK ecoplant to make additional payments to the partners. But DL E&C and SK ecoplant did not, causing a conflict with them. In particular, DL E&C and SK ecoplant reportedly demanded that the partners charge costs through a claim.
