KT announced on Sept. 23 that it has forged a partnership with Vector Institute in Canada for cooperation in R&D and business promotion in artificial intelligence (AI), an important axis of its DIGICO business.

A signing ceremony was held at the Vector Institute in Toronto on Sept. 22 (local time) with the attendance of KT Strategic Planning Office Director Kim Chae-hee and Vector Institute CEO Garth Gibson.

The Vector Institute is an independent, not-for-profit corporation dedicated to research in the field of AI, excelling in machine and deep learning. It was launched in 2017 with generous support from the government of Canada, government of Ontario, and private companies. Prof. Geoffrey Hinton, a cognitive psychologist and computer scientist most noted for his work on artificial neural networks, is working for the institute as a senior advisor. It has established itself as a world-class AI research lab through cooperation with leading companies such as Google and Nvidia.

KT will collaborate with the institute in three areas -- joint R&D, human resources development and global ecosystem expansion. The two sides will apply technologies such as voice recognition and vision AI based on large-capacity AI models to KT AI services through a joint research project. KT plans to use voice recognition technologies secured by KT GiGA Genie service for upgrading the company's AI contact centers (AICCs) and AI call assistants.

In addition, the institute's education program will be used to expand the training of world-class AI talent. KT plans to contribute to nurturing talented Korean AI professionals by enhancing its youth talent nurturing programs, such as AIVLE School.
