OLED Displays to Be Used More Widely

Samsung Electronics will adopt OLED displays for its TVs next year.

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics will adopt OLED displays for their key products, including smartphones and TVs, next year.

Samsung Electronics, the world's No. 1 TV producer, is planning to unveil QD OLED TVs at CES 2022, which will be held in Las Vegas in January 2022. It will use QD OLED panels from Samsung Display, which has started mass production of the panels since the fourth quarter of 2021.

If Samsung Electronics jumps into the OLED TV market, it is expected to fuel the growth of the OLED TV market. LG Electronics sold 1,735,000 OLED TVs in the first half of 2021. In the second quarter alone, it sold 945,600 units, three times more than its sales a year ago. Sony, the third-largest player in the TV industry, will also release their QD OLED TV models.

LG Display has secured a dominant position in the large OLED TV panel market. It is expanding to displays for mobile devices. It is increasing its presence by supplying OLED displays for Apple’s smartphones. Apple is expected to use OLED panels for the iPad and laptops in the future, fueling competition between Samsung Display and LG Display in the small and medium-sized OLED markets.

LG Display is increasing its investment to sharpen its competitiveness in small and medium-sized OLEDs. In August 2021, the display giant announced that it would invest 3.3 trillion won by 2024 to build a production line for small and medium-sized OLED panels at its Paju plant near Seoul. In September, it decided to invest 1.6 trillion won to expand OLED modular lines at its Haiphong plant in Vietnam.
