To Lower Clean Hydrogen Production Cost

South Korea has joined Mission Innovation 2.0 R&D group.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy joined Mission Innovation 2.0 on June 2 and announced that it would lower the clean hydrogen production cost from approximately US$7 to US$2 or so per kilogram by 2030 in cooperation with 19 countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany and Australia.

The Mission Innovation is a climate change-related R&D group of 23 countries, which include the United States, Japan and European states. In this group, South Korea has participated in a US$22 million R&D project since 2018 together with Canada, the United States, India and Germany.

The Mission Innovation recently set up technical divisions in charge of hydrogen, electric power and ship technologies. The South Korean government is planning to take part in each of the divisions.

The joint research for clean hydrogen cost reduction will be in progress in the hydrogen division. In addition, the 19 countries will work together so that 100 hydrogen valleys can be built worldwide.

The electric power division will conduct research on various types of renewable energy. The goals of the ship technology division include raising the ratio of ships using eco-friendly fuels to at least 5 percent of ocean-going vessels.
