10 Hydrogen Production Stations to Be Built in 2021

A total of 10 hydrogen production stations will be built nationwide this year.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on March 8 that a total of 10 hydrogen production stations would be built nationwide this year along with more hydrogen charging stations.

The 10 hydrogen production stations will be set up at a budget of 66.6 billion won. The stations are divided into one mid-size to produce at least 4,000 tons of hydrogen and nine to produce 400 tons each. The former will be established at a site lacking byproduct hydrogen so that nationwide hydrogen supply can be carried out smoothly. The latter will be installed in regions with more hydrogen buses.

The hydrogen charging stations will be built mainly in the capital area, where vehicles far outnumber charging stations. Those for commercial hydrogen vehicles will be built mainly by private companies after a special purpose company is set up in the first half. Those are likely to come with existing gas stations.

In addition, the ministry is planning to increase the number of rapid EV chargers to 12,000 this year. Apartment buildings with at least 100 units and superstores are planned to be subject to a larger scale of mandatory installation.
