Foldable phones from Samsung Electronics

Market research firm Counterpoint Research said on Dec. 23 that this year's global foldable smartphone shipments would reach 2.8 million units and Samsung Electronics would account for 73 percent of the total.

This year, Samsung Electronics released the Galaxy Z Flip in the first half and the Galaxy Z Fold 2 in the second half as its foldable smartphones. Approximately 55 percent of foldable smartphones have been sold in South Korea and Europe with China’s ratio at 25 percent. In China, Huawei released its first foldable smartphone Mate X late last year and the Mate Xs in March this year.

Next year, the global foldable smartphone market is expected to more than double before an even more rapid growth in 2022. Chinese OEMs are likely to enter the market and Apple's first foldable smartphone is expected to come out in the second half of 2022. The market size estimate for 2022 is 17 million units.
