rebellions and Samsung are collaborating on semiconductor development.

AI fabless semiconductor startup rebellions is stepping into a joint semiconductor development partnership with Samsung Electronics.

rebellions announced on Oct. 5 that they have agreed to co-develop a next-generation semiconductor named Rebel, specialized for super large language models (LLM) like GPT, with Samsung Electronics. Samsung, being a foundry, will not only handle production but also be involved in logic and layout design, as well as validation. The production will be executed using Samsung’s 4-nm process and the semiconductor will also use Samsung’s HBM3E memory. The target completion date for the development is set for the second half of next year.

Both companies are hopeful that this collaboration will result in the development of a high-performance AI semiconductor, which can lead them to capture the AI semiconductor market. It’s highlighted that a successful high-performance AI semiconductor requires not only fabless design capabilities but also high-quality memory chips, design houses, and foundries. Hence, comprehensive cooperation with Samsung Electronics is expected to enhance the quality of the semiconductor. Earlier this year, rebellions’ Atom AI semiconductor was produced using Samsung’s 5-nm process.

A representative from rebellions mentioned, “A notable feature of this Rebel development is that the entire process will be conducted with only the capabilities of domestic companies, without involving overseas foundries or design houses.”
