Leading the Way

In February, thanks to the effects of the newly released Galaxy s23 smartphone, Samsung Electronics dethroned Apple, rising to first place in the global smartphone sales standings.

According to sources in the financial investment industry and global market research firm Counterpoint Research on March 29, Samsung Electronics accounted for 21.1 percent of the global smartphone market with a 3.5 percent point increase from the previous month in February, beating Apple. Apple posted a market share of 20.2 percent, which represented a decrease of a 0.7 percentage points. The two were followed by Xiaomi (11.5 percent), Oppo (8.9 percent), and Vivo (8.2 percent).

Global smartphone sales in February totaled 89.57 million units, down 10 percentage points from the previous month and down 15 percentage points from a year before, leading to a drop in sales compared to the same period of 2022.

The effects of China’s reopening, which gave smartphone makers a lot of anticipation, were weak. In February, 21.39 million smartphones were sold in the Chinese market, down 10 percent from the previous year and 28 percent from the previous month.

In the United States, 9.43 million units were sold, posting a decrease of 6 percent from January and a year-on-year drop of 4 percent. Europe posted 12.27 million units in sales as they slid by 2 percent from January and 22 percent from a year earlier. The Indian smartphone market saw 10.08 million units sold in January, which resulted in a month-on-month drop of 4 percent and a year-on-year drop of 18 percent. Accordingly, smartphone sales descended in major smartphone markets around the world in February.
