Stellantis Runs Car Plants in Ontario

Samsung SDI is likely to build its second North American battery plant in Ontario, Canada.

Ontario, Canada's most populous province, has emerged as a strong candidate site for Samsung SDI’s second North American battery plant.

Victor Anthony Fedeli, Ontario minister of economic development, job creation and trade, has recently met with Samsung SDI officials to discuss the construction of a battery plant in Ontario. Local media outlets quoted Fedeli as saying the outcomes of the talks were positive, and he expected results to come out soon.

Earlier this year, Samsung SDI and global automaker Stellantis announced the construction of a joint battery plant in Indiana of the United States. Stellantis runs internal combustion engine-powered car plants in Brampton and Windsor, Ontario, and plans to convert them into plants for electric and hybrid vehicles.

Industry observers say that Samsung SDI is highly likely to build a battery plant in Ontario. Stellantis is in need of a battery joint venture to supply batteries to the Brampton plant, which will start replacing facilities in 2024 for restart in 2025.
