The Genesis G90

The Genesis G90 overtook the Mercedes-Benz S-Class in sales in Korea in the first half of this year.

Domestic G90 sales hit 9,962 units in the first half of 2022, a Genesis official said on Sept. 4. This figure is 3,400 units more than the 6,473 units recorded by the S-Class. During the same period last year, the S-Class sold 11,131 units, twice the 5,089 units of the G90.

In the January-August period of this year, the Genesis sold 14,658 units in the domestic market, a monthly average of 1,830 units. If this pace is maintained, Geneis is expected to easily reach its sales target of 20,000 units for 2022.

The growing popularity of the G90, which is priced at over 100 million won, is attributable to new model effects and a relatively stable supply of automotive semiconductors compared with imported brands. In early 2022, the Genesis released the second-generation G90, a fully-changed new model, for the first time in six years since its first generation model. The new model received much attention as its pre-orders recorded 12,700 units on the first day. In addition, foreign automakers slashed car production due to a shortage of automotive semiconductors, which had continued since last year. On the other hand, the Genesis is dealing with the semiconductor shortage better than foreign carmakers.

Meanwhile, the G90 equipped with Level 3 autonomous driving technology, Highway Driving Pilot (HDP), is scheduled to come out in Korea at the end of 2022. HDP is a technology that allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheels and enables their cars to change lanes or enter/exit highways on their own.
