Divergent Displays

LG Display is planning to raise the yield of its ultra HD OLED panel production facilities to 80 percent within this year. The company is currently recording a yield of 80 to 90 percent in full HD OLED panel production. In the meantime, Samsung Display is reshaping its OLED R&D organization for the development and commercialization of applied products such as OLED TVs. To this end, Samsung Display split its LCD and OLED business units from each other on April 1.

The two companies’ business strategies were unveiled at the first OLED Korea Conference held on April 2 at the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies in Yeoksam-dong, Seoul.

“We are going to produce at least 600,000 units of OLED TVs, and increase the volume to 1.5 million next year to account for 1 percent of the global TV market,” LG Display explained at the conference hosted by market research firm UBI research. “We think that AMOLED must evolve to achieve different values in the form of flexible, bendable, mirror, and transparent displays,” said Samsung Display Managing Director Lee Ki-yong, adding, “We are expecting that our recently reinstated OLED division will facilitate our research and development efforts for the purpose.”
