Sales Volume Close to Zero

A Micro LED TV at Samsung 837 in Manhattan

Samsung Electronics released 110-inch micro LED TVs last year. This product uses densely arranged micro LED elements instead of backlights and the self-light emission provides the advantage of picture quality improvement.

The price of the product is 170 million won and its sales volume is close to zero. Besides, more and more defects are being reported and even some of those exhibited in showcases and stores are defective.

According to market research firms, products of this type are not marketable yet. For example, Omdia recently estimated this year’s micro LED TV panel shipments at less than 1,000 units while estimating this year’s LCD and OLED TV panel shipments at 250 million and 10 million units, respectively. It is likely that most of those hundreds of panels are for purposes such as display and sample production and those for sale are nearly zero.

The quality of the product is far from acceptable. One of the TVs can be seen at Samsung 837 in Manhattan and it has defective pixels. The same defect has been found in South Korea, too. Samsung Electronics is not expanding its micro LED TV lineup due to the high level of technical difficulty. It planned to release 80- and 90-inch products last year but the release has been postponed indefinitely.
