SK Innovation announced on Aug. 11 that the company's vice chairman Kim Jun visited Poland and asked for the Polish government's support for Korea’s bid to host Expo 2030 in Busan. He also discussed cooperation between Poland and SK Group in the green energy business.

Kim met with Waldemar Buda, minister of economic development and technology of Poland, in Warsaw on Aug. 9 (local time). SKIET President Roh Jae-sok accompanied Kim at the meeting.

Kim is serving as the chairman of the Environment Business Committee of the Supex Council, the highest consultative body within SK Group. The committee orchestrates the group's green energy business.

“We are planning to make Expo 2030 Busan a platform to solve various challenges and tasks facing the world, including the climate crisis, by bringing together people around the world,” Kim said at the meeting. “Expo 2030 Busan will focus on global sustainable development plans. As SK Group and Poland see eye to eye on the environment and future energy, the event will offer a golden opportunity to Poland and SK.”

Poland has announced the ‘Energy Policy 2040,’ which aims to dramatically slash dependence on coal and expand investment in offshore wind and solar power. SK Group also declared net zero (carbon neutrality) by 2050 and is actively promoting green energy businesses, such as electric vehicle batteries, hydrogen, and small module reactors (SMRs), in an effort to achieve this goal.

Kim expressed high expectations for close cooperation with Poland in the field of green energy. “I am grateful to the Polish government for its big interest in and support for SK Group’s ongoing investment projects in Poland,” Kim said. “We will do our utmost to make our ongoing projects in Poland successful and positively consider making additional investment in the country.”

“The Polish government is pursuing flexible cooperation with Korean companies, including SK,” Buda said. “As Poland is promoting the growth of the future energy sector such as electric vehicles, we will actively support Korean companies that are expanding their investment in related sectors in Poland.”
