The 9th Asian Film Awards (AFA), held on March 25 in Macau, presented Im Kwon-taek with a lifetime achievement award, and Bae Doo-na won Best Actress.

The event featured 74 nominees of 42 films from eight countries. Chinese domination continued, scooping 3 out of the 4 top prizes – Best Director, Best Film, and Best Actor – 2 Korean cineastes stood out on the podium.

The AFA’s Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes film professionals that have made fundamental achievements and a lasting impact of outstanding artistic, cultural, and commercial significance in Asian cinema.

Im Kwon-taek, revered as the godfather of Korean cinema, has produced over a hundred films across different genres spanning his half-century career that started in 1962. Based on typical Korean subjects, his work received universal resonance, achieving global recognition with prominent awards including a French Légion d'honneur and a Fellini Medal from UNESCO. South Korea’s most prolific filmmaker has pioneered his world in the Korean movie industry, directing international attention to his nation and country. Im’s latest film, “Revivre,” premiered at last year’s Venice festival, telling a story about a loyal husband whose nature was tempted by the lust for a sexual dalliance.

At the awards ceremony, audiences paid tireless respect to the veteran director’s untiring experiments.

Bae Doo-na in “A Girl at my Door” was awarded for her portrayal of a police officer named Young-nam. She frankly unraveled a woman’s suppressed feelings in a male-dominated workplace without omissions. After being transferred to a remote seaside town, she met a bullied teenager Dohee, who spent her time alone roaming about dark alleys. Despite an abusive father and her mother's abandonment, Dohee retains a childlike innocence that touches Young-nam, and they become friends. Young-nam invites Dohee to stay with her to protect her, which leads them into a new chapter of their lives.

Praised for her cosmopolitan manners in the hub of Macau, Bae promised at her acceptance speech to do her best to fulfill her role as an actress in all circumstances.
