Tesla Takes Top Spot, Followed by BYD

Hyundai Motor’s electric vehicle IONIQ 5

Hyundai Motor Group was ranked fifth in the global EV sales rankings announced by Japan’s Nihon Keizai Shimbun on July 28.

The rankings were based on electric vehicle sales data in 66 countries compiled by MarkLines, a company specializing in automobile market research. Tesla of the United States came in first with 564,000 units, followed by BYD of China with 324,000 units and Shanghai GM Wuling of China with 310,000 units.

Among the top 10 companies, Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Corp. enjoyed the largest year-on-year increases. Hyundai Motor sold 169,000 units in the first half of the year, double the figure a year ago.

Hyundai Motor and Kia launched the IONIQ 5 and the EV6, respectively, in the U.S. and European markets earlier this year. Both models received good reviews, selling more than 10,000 units each in the United States alone. BYD also jumped from fourth place to second  as sales of mid- to low-end models ballooned, mainly in the Chinese market. Its sales soared 3.5 times compared to the same period of last year.

Hyundai Motor’s rise pulled the Renault-Nissan Alliance down to 6th place. Toyota and Honda each sold 10,000 electric vehicles, putting their names in the top 20 list.
