Signs Joint Research Agreement with 6 Research Institutes

Hyundai Motor Group has forged a partnership with Korean research institutes to develop mobility machines for lunar surface exploration.

Hyundai Motor Group is set to begin the development of mobility machines for lunar surface exploration in partnership with Korean research institutes.

Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Corp. announced on July 27 that they signed a joint research agreement with six Korean government-funded research institutes and launched a consultative body.

The six research institutes are the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI), the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT), the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) and the Korea Automotive Technology Institute (KATECH).

Hyundai and Kia formed a consultative body by gathering engineers from the fields of software and hardware design, space environment and special equipment, as well as the Robotics Lab. Collaborative research will begin in earnest as early as next month.

This agreement is meaningful in that it mobilizes all the capabilities possessed by the government-funded research institutes and the two companies for the development of space technology. The development of moon exploring machines requires technologies for scientific exploration equipment, software for operation, and space communications.

In February last year, Hyundai Motor released images containing Paraklete, an unmanned rover developed by New Horizons Studio, a future mobility development organization run by Hyundai Motor in Silicon Valley of the United States.
