Asks BOE to Produce Panels for Galaxy Watch 6

Samsung Electronics plans to use Chinese-made display panels more extensively for its Galaxy mobile products to be released next year.

Samsung Electronics plans to load Chinese-made display panels into new Galaxy mobile products to be released next year. Chinese display panels have been used only for mid- to low-end models such as the Galaxy A series. Experts say that Samsung chose price competitiveness in consideration of economic uncertainties.

Samsung Electronics has recently requested China’s largest display maker BOE to produce panels for Galaxy Watch 6, which will come out in the second half of 2023. This marked the first time that Chinese-made panels were adopted for the Galaxy Watch series. Thus far, Samsung Display has produced panels for the Galaxy Watch.

Currently, Samsung Electronics is coordinating production processes and schedules with BOE. The Korean smartphone giant is also discussing a contract with BOE to have the latter produce OLED panels for flagship Samsung smartphones such as Galaxy foldable phones.

An official contract is expected to be signed around October this year, but the proportion of Chinese panels is not expected to be high, considering that Samsimg Electronics is still verifying BOE’s development capabilities.

A Samsung official said that the company is considering making deals with BOE as part of its efforts to diversify parts suppliers, adding that nothing has been decided yet concerning the deals.
