NIS to Develop Security Requirements for iPhone MDM
The National Intelligence Service (NIS) announced on June 10 that it would develop security requirements related to iPhone mobile device management (MDM) by the end of this year.
At present, the MDM requirements of the NIS are limited to Android phones without covering the iPhone, which means no iPhone user can enter the presidential office building in Yongsan with the MDM app installed. This caused some conflict between the South Korean government and the U.S. press corps during the recent U.S.-South Korea summit, and the use of the latter’s iPhones was limited to the press conference hall in the building.
The MDM can be defined as software for mobile management. With the software installed on a mobile phone, the administrator can conduct setting and monitor it. The purpose of the software is to limit tethering, Bluetooth, recording and photographing in a security facility.
As of now, the same limitation on the iPhone is being done with, for example, a sticker on the camera lens. Once the NIS comes up with the new requirements, reporters using the device can enter the presidential office building with the NIS app downloaded.
