Diameter Set at 46 mm

Cylindrical batteries from Samsung SDI

Samsung SDI is expediting the development of next-generation cylindrical batteries, with standardization work in its final stage. The company has fixed the diameter of the new battery at 46 mm, but the height still remains to be set. It is currently in talks with several corporate customers over the height.

Currently, Samsung SDI produces cylindrical batteries of the 2170 (21 mm in diameter and 70 mm in height) and 1865 (18 mm in diameter and 65 mm in  height) types.

Industry insiders believe that the 46xx standard can increase energy density five times and output six times compared to conventional batteries. This explains why it is called a game changer.

SNE Research, a market research firm specializing in energy, predicts that cylindrical batteries, which account for 19 percent of the electric vehicle battery market this year, will increase its share to 26 percent in 2030. Samsung SDI is expanding its cylindrical battery production lines in Cheonan, Korea and Malaysia.
