A New Security Tool against Malicious Apps

Samsung Electronics will release a solution to block the installation of malicious apps on smartphones.

Samsung Electronics will release a solution to block the installation of malicious apps for voice phishing on smartphones.

The company announced on May 18 that it would apply a new security solution to the Galaxy S21 and the S22 series in the first half of the year. The solution alerts users when it detects malicious apps that are installed through a path other than the official app store.

“It blocks the installation of apps with a verified history of use for voice phishing, and displays a warning or block notification as a pop-up message when an app from an unknown source is installed,” a Samsung Electronics official explained.

Smartphone users can see a list of unidentified apps and set control options for each app. After applying the security solution, if a user selects “disallow all installations of apps from unknown sources,” the user can block the installation of apps from unknown sources.

Samsung Electronics plans to sequentially apply the new security solution to all Galaxy smartphones with One UI 4.1 or later in Korea, starting with the Galaxy S21 and S22.
