A New-concept Nearshore Hydrogen Plant

Officials from KENTECH, KSOE and the ABS pose for photo at the AiP certificate award ceremony in Huston, the United States, on May 2.

The Korea Institute of Energy Technology (KENTECH) has obtained approval in principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) on the concept design of a new marine hydrogen production and liquefaction plant, which was jointly developed with Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE).

ABS is a world-class ship and offshore plant certification body.  An AiP certificate award ceremony took place at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC), the world’s largest conference held in Houston, on May 2 (local time), in the presence of officials from KENTECH, KSOE and the ABS.

The technology jointly developed by KENTECH and KSOE is a new-concept offshore plant that can produce hydrogen using water electrolysis technology on a nearshore coast, liquefy and store produced hydrogen, and vaporize it for supply to a client.

KENTECH and KSOE plan to continue to cooperate in areas such as feasibility studies and R&D for additional hydrogen technology concepts, the commercialization of R&D results and presentations at renowned overseas academic meetings.
