Stronghold of Japanese Carmakers

The IONIQ 5

Hyundai Motor Co. is putting up a good fight in Indonesia, a stronghold of Japanese automobiles.

Hyundai Motor Indonesia announced on May 1 that the number of pre-orders for the IONIQ 5 reached 1,587 units on April 27. The IONIQ 5 was first unveiled at the 2022 IIMS Motor Show in Jakarta, Indonesia, on March 31. In 2021, a total of 693 electric vehicles were sold in Indonesia.

The IIMS Motor Show is considered one of Indonesia’s two largest motor shows along with the GIIAS Motor Show. Hyundai Motor took the wraps off the IONIQ 5 for the first time at this auto show and held an event to allow customers to experience the vehicle to load (V2L) function that can supply electricity to the outside of the vehicle.

The IONIQ 5 is the first electric vehicle produced in the ASEAN region. Its volume production began at Hyundai Motor’s Indonesian plant, which was completed in March. Japanese car brands account for 95 percent of the Indonesian market, but Hyundai’s IONIQ and Kona accounted for 87 percent of the 693 electric vehicles sold in Indonesia in 2021.

Brisk sales of Hyundai Motor’s electric vehicles in the Indonesian market have fueled demand for Hyundai Motor’s internal combustion engine vehicles. Hyundai officially began to sell the Creta in February. It sold 1,440 units of the model in April. The Creta surpassed the Honda HR-V, the previous leader in the same class, taking the top spot for the second month in a row.
