Poland to Build 6 Nuclear Power Plants by 2043

A nuclear power plant in Poland

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has submitted a proposal for a nuclear power plant project to Poland.

KHNP officials will meet with Adam Guibourgé-Czetwertyński, undersecretary of state at the Polish Ministry of Climate and Environment, on April 21 to submit a project proposal. The Polish ministry is in charge of nuclear power plant construction projects in Poland. A letter from the Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Moon Seung-wook will also be delivered at the meeting.

KHNP plans to explain to the Polish official not only the safety, economic feasibility, and excellence of the Korean-type nuclear power plant but also KHNP’s business management capabilities, differentiated technology and the Korean nuclear industry’s efforts to work with Poland.

The Polish government announced Poland's energy policy until 2040 (PEP2040) last year, which included plans to build new nuclear power plants. Starting with the operation of one new nuclear power plant in 2033, the plan envisages the construction of six nuclear power plants with a capacity of six to nine gigawatts (GW) at two sites by 2043. The project will be implemented in the form of an intergovernmental agreement.

Earlier, Minister Moon and KHNP president Chung Jae-hoon met with Piotr Naimski, secretary of state and government plenipotentiary for strategic energy infrastructure of Poland, in November 2021, emphasizing that Korea is the best partner for the new nuclear power plant project in Poland.

KHNP is promoting nuclear power plant exports to several countries in addition to Poland. In November 2021, it submitted a security answer document and a bid for the nuclear power plant project in the Czech Republic. It is also in talks for participation in a project in Egypt, which calls for construction of four nuclear power plants in El Dava region.

Tender results will be announced in 2023 for the Polish Project and in 2024 for the Czech project, and as early as the first half of 2022 for the Egyptian project. In addition, KHNP’s participation in the tritium removal facility (TRF) supply project for a Romanian nuclear power plant is expected to be announced in 2022.
