Samsung Electronics Beats Intel Last Year

Samsung Electronics topped the global semiconductor market with a 12.3 percent share in 2021.

Market research firm Gartner said on April 17 that the global semiconductor market sales increased 26.3 percent to US$594.952 billion in 2021, when the global market share of the top 10 companies in the industry was 54.6 percent.

According to it, Samsung Electronics topped the market with a share of 12.3 percent and its sales in the industry increased 28 percent to US$73.197 billion. The company outperformed Intel and rose to the top in three years. Last year, Intel’s sales in the industry fell 0.3 percent to US$72.536 billion and its market share was 12.2 percent.

SK Hynix increased its sales by 40.6 percent to US$36.352 billion to come in third with a share of 6.1 percent, followed by Micron Technology (US$28.624 billion, 4.8 percent), Qualcomm (US$27.093 billion, 4.6 percent) and Broadcom (US$18.793 billion, 3.2 percent).
 

AMD came in 10th with US$16.299 billion, up 68.6 percent from a year ago. MediaTek (seventh, US$17.617 billion) and Nvidia (ninth) increased their annual sales by 60.2 percent and 58 percent, respectively.

By country, South Korea accounted for 19.3 percent of the global market last year and China’s market share fell from 6.7 percent to 6.5 percent. By segment, automotive semiconductor grew 34.9 percent, memory chip grew 33.2 percent to account for 27.9 percent of the total market sales, and wireless communications grew 24.6 percent.
