Cho Hyun-ah, former executive vice president of Korean Air, filed a notice of appeal to a Seoul court on Feb. 13. The filing came one day after she was sentenced to a year in prison.

Her defense team said, “We have submitted a petition of appeal to the court on account of misunderstanding of the facts in the trial, misinterpretation of aviation law, and unfair determination of punishment.”

On Feb. 12, a Seoul court criticized her behavior, saying, “With her money and position, she made human dignity and value kneel down. Also, she did not have the least courtesy for humans and considered her employees as her slaves.”

The court said Cho was guilty of forcing a flight to change its route. That was the most serious charge she faced. The court said, “The course of a plane should be considered from landing to takeoff. Even though the aircraft had already been pushed back from the gate for take-off, Cho ordered the pilots to return the aircraft to the gate to force the flight's chief steward off the plane. Therefore, it should be considered that she illegally altered the course of the plane.”

Cho was also convicted of assault on the cabin crew. The court said that she verbally and physically abused the crew on the excuse of breaching the company’s first-class service guidelines. On this account, she obstructed the flight's chief steward in the performance of his duties to manage safety on the airplane.

Also, the court said, “The order Cho made to the flight's chief steward is the same as exercising her power over the flight's captain.”

In the end, the court sentenced Cho Hyun-ah, former vice president of Korean Air, to one year in prison without probation in the trial.

Meanwhile, Cho submitted a letter expressing her remorse six times before the verdict hearing on Feb. 12. However, she did not submit any petition from the victims or settlement with them. Regarding this, the court explained the reason for the prison sentence, saying, “Cho has not made any settlement with the victims. We do wonder if she deeply regrets what she did.”
