To Turn out 150 Experts a Year

The Ministry of Science and ICT has selected five colleges that will run space technology R&D and training centers.

The Ministry of Science and ICT selected five colleges on April 10 that will run space technology R&D and training centers.

Specifically, space transportation and communication will be covered by those to be set up at Pusan National University and KAIST, respectively. Inha University’s will cover space exploration and resource utilization. Gyeongsang National University’s will conduct research related to low-orbit satellite constellation systems and that of Sejong University will conduct research on space navigation and satellite technologies.

The five training centers will train graduate students while collaborating with research institutes and companies in the industry and running international cooperation programs. At the same time, the five schools will provide educational and research support and the companies will offer job opportunities while seeking to commercialize technologies. A total of 150 experts a year are expected to come out and the ministry will invest five billion won in the project until 2026.

In the meantime, the Korea Aerospace Research Institute announced on April 8 that its lunar probe is in the process of electromagnetic wave testing after the completion of heat, vacuum and vibration tests. “Once the current test is completed successfully, the lunar orbiter will be shipped out to Florida to leave Earth on Falcon 9 in August and reach the lunar orbit on Dec. 16,” it said.
