Cultural Convergence

The government and CJ Group are jointly pushing ahead with a project to build the virtuous cycle into the cultural content industry.

Hosting the launch ceremony for the project dubbed the “Cultural Creation Convergence Belt” at CJ E&M Center in Seoul on Feb. 11, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has announced that it would build a virtuous cycle of planning, production, realization, and reinvestment in the convergence cultural content industry by 2017.

The government is planning to establish and manage the Cultural Creation Convergence Belt, develop representative Hallyu convergence content with pilot projects for its commercialization, and support financing for promising projects in the future.

The Cultural Creation Convergence Center, which will be the backbone of the project, is located in the CJ E&M Center of the CJ Group. The group will build the database of a diverse range of ideas, which are needed for content planning, and create content and support production.

CJ Group will operate a mentoring system first by using 78 existing experts related to cultural content and food culture as mentors, and then expand the system to the mentoring network with 65 cultural agencies and top experts with which the group signed an MOU.

At the end of the year, a “Cultural Creation Venture Complex” will be established under the Korea Tourism Organization. It will offer offices and production facilities to new small and medium-sized companies in the complex so they can mutually create synergy.

Meanwhile, attending the event, President Park Geun-hye said, “The Cultural Creation Convergence Belt will be a bridgehead of the prosperity of Korean culture, and also play a pivotal role in the cultural content industry. The project marks the beginning of a new era for Korea to become a cultural powerhouse.”
