The Korea Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KORCHAM) announced on January 31 that it would increase the number of companies of middle standing in Korea from 1,400 or so to at least 3,000 between this year and 2015.

“We’ll set up a new department to achieve the goal while trying to improve the business ecosystem by strengthening the role of our in-house committee for middle-sized companies,” it said. The announcement was made at the 17th meeting of the committee.

The KORCHAM has already reorganized itself to set up an office dedicated to the goal and appointed Choi Byung-oh, chairman of the Fashion Group Hyungji, as the new head of the committee. The number of the committee members is increased by 20 to 100, too.

The KORCHAM is planning to launch various projects in this vein once the new government is in place. These include panel discussions for the growth of middle-sized enterprises, fact-finding surveys related to their most important issues and business environment research.
